Is it really better to drive traffic to my website

Is it really better to drive traffic to my website? I know this sounds like a stupid question, but before you dismiss me and click away, hear me out.

I follow successful people, who better right? Now one of the most important lessons I learned last year is that I can’t do what I see others doing, not even the most successful online marketers.the new internet marketer

There are so many things that have gone into why that person is so successful and why their business model works for them, and even though I’m capable of doing what they do, meaning execute certain tasks, it doesn’t mean that it’s the best business model for me.

Lately, I’ve been following this online hot shot called Kimra Luna. She started her online business in May of 2014 and by December had made close to $100,000. One thing I’ve noticed about her is that she barely has any videos on her YouTube channel and at this writing, she has 2 blog posts on her website and one is advertising a product.

Kimra’s exposure and popularity was developed on Facebook, not her website. She grew her mailing list by using Facebook ads to drive traffic to her webinars and her offers. Her main way of growing her list is with webinars.

Which is why I ask is it really better to drive traffic to my website. There are successful bloggers who don’t even have a website. When I got started online in 2008, I didn’t have a website. I strictly used YouTube to grow my fan base and earn affiliate commissions.

I know the benefits of having a website:

  • You’re in total control and can post whatever you desire.
  • Your site won’t be taken down causing you to lose all your hard work
  • You have the ability to grow your website to sell products and services
  • It’s your home on the web and is where people can easily find you and learn about you

But

People are into video now and more inclined to be where video is, which is YouTube along with other video hosting sites, and social media. I saw today that you can now post videos to Twitter.

So let’s look at the platforms where people hang out that now have video; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google Plus, Pinterest, Tumblr and Vine. I’m sure there are other sites I didn’t mention.

So if the traffic I’m seeking is on these platforms, isn’t that where I should be? One could easily build their business with Facebook alone. You run the risk of losing your standing and information if they close your account or ever go out of business (shaking my head no), but that can also happen on your own domain. If Hostgator or GoDaddy were to close tomorrow, I’d no longer have this website.

laptop, ipad, and iphoneThe purpose of getting visitors to your website, as I’ve been told, is to help you be seen as an authority and grow your list. My question is, does this really need to be done with a website? Does a person really need a website?

I mean if no one visits this website, reads or comments on my posts, what’s the point? Why not spend that time building an audience on social media? With your own Facebook page you can post your blog content. It’s actually encouraged and helps you get found in the search engines.

Not only that, but you can post images and video.  Throw in a Facebook ad that sends visitors to your lead page and you’re building your mailing list.  Same result, different process.

When you find information online, which sources do you visit the most? Do you click on the image of the video or click thru if the info is on Pinterest or Facebook?  For me, it depends on what I’m looking for.  If it’s a “how to” type thing, it’s either a video or a website.  So having a website is crucial to some extinct along with the relativity of the subject.

I’ll be honest, I’m not crazy about maintaining a blog. Why, because I also have to spread my time and energy across multiple sites. A good rule of thumb in internet marketing is to post your content on social media sites, which involves more time and energy.  I know this can be done with the click of a mouse, but you’re also encouraged to visit social networks to you know – network.pretty girl pointing

I’m up in the air about this, because I’ve been taught it’s better to have a website, but I don’t see that being the fastest or best way to share information anymore. In my opinion, Facebook is a platform in itself and can easily be used as your website.

I would love to do an experiment and see if I could actually start and grow a business strictly using social media.
